Barcelona. A Summer Night's Dream.
In Barcelona we celebrate the Night of Saint John welcoming the summer solstice. It’s the shortest night of the year and it is surrounded by magic, symbols and legends. Three elements define this ancestral celebration. Fire is the purifying element that liberates us from bad luck. A passion always present in him and which he has been developing in giant steps since 2008.
His work is best enjoyed in big format, taking hold of the space in a clean manner. The images are emphatic and suggestive, capturing pieces of reality and showing it in dual form, with brain and with a heart. Brisa del Mar. The Elevated Oasis.
Next June 3rd will see the reopening to the public of the terrace Brisa del Mar, a unique and exclusive space in front of Barcelona’s old harbor. Situated on the top floor of the Hotel Duquesa de Cardona, on the historical Passeig Colom in front of the Moll de la Fusta, it offers spectacular views of Barcelona’ seaside – from the Hotel Arts to the Maremagnum and World Trade Center by way of the Barceloneta.

Pitti Immagine Uomo, in its 78th year, is the most international important event in men’s fashion. The most renowned brands and labels use this fair to launch their new collections and present their advertising strategies.
The opening will take place at the Fortezza de Basso in Florence on June 15th and the closing ceremony is scheduled for June 17th, 2010. The present edition highlights the premiere of Jil Sander, with designer Raf Simons, on the catwalks. Although it is always a pleasure strolling through the streets and over the bridges of Florence, it is even more so at this time of year, when it is a particular delight to be able to enjoy all the open-air places and corners the Tuscan capital offers.

This is the focus that Anka Manshusen, one of our favorite artists, has given to her photography workshops, which will begin at the end of May. The goal is to be guided in the discovery of one’s expression, that which makes our creative personality unique. During the class each participant will create their own portrait and during the development aspects such as the format choice, the angle, the composition and perspective will be addressed. All you need is a digital camera, not necessarily a reflex one, and obviously know how to use it. Additionally, Anka offers different possible durations – an intensive workshop of 2,5 days or, if preferred, a more relaxed one over the course of a month.
Anka gives us the possibility to observe with our own eyes the link to the place we live in, a unique opportunity to enrich our daily life.

WAFAE. Voluntary Work in Tangiers.
The WAFAE Association organizes from July 9th to August 8th the 11th edition of the Voluntary Work Camps in Tangiers. During this month a group of volunteers from all over Spain will travel to Tangiers to take part in a international cooperation project carried out by the WAFAE Association in collaboration with the ALAMAL Association for cultural and social development.
More than 600 people have already enjoyed this unique and unforgettable experience. In the work camps the volunteers teach Spanish, Catalan, English and New Technologies classes to both children and adults as well as organizing different activities within the campaign to raise awareness about the environment and sustainable development. These activities are of a diverse nature: participation in the inauguration of the campaign, cooperation in the fair of participating bodies, visits and dynamic preparations of children’s camps in the zone, visits to other associations etc. And, of course, also cultural visits, leisure activities, free time and trip to cities close to Tangiers.

Clara Gràcia. La Fauve.
Paris, October of 1905, the art critic Louis Vauxcelles used for the first time the term Les Fauves (The Wild Animals) in an article in the magazine Gil Blas after having visiting the Autumn Salon of the same year. It was in reference to Henri Matisse, André Derain, Maurice Vlaminck and Georges Rouault, and specifically to the use of color and technique employed by them in their works. In the beginning, the term was a pejorative, although a century later it would seem to the contrary given that we think of them as authentic geniuses in the history of art.
It is almost certain that Clara Gràcia, a Barcelona artist, picked up the essence of Les Fauves during her formative years in Paris and has added daring, experience and sentiment to it. Clara Gràcia is brave with colors, achieving special compositions, and often uses a spatula with her technique thus creating unique strokes that add a singular texture to her works – all of this contributes to complement her work with a quality and expressiveness that convinces upon first sight.
Her newest exhibition, curated by Sonia Vicente, will be inaugurated at the Sala Iris Gallery of the artistic Hotel Estela Barcelona – Hotel del Arte this Friday, April 16th, at 7.30 pm in the Port d’Aiguadolç in Sitges. The presentation of the inauguration is the credit of the illustrator Jordi Labanda. A week-end of sea, sun and the color of Clara Gràcia’s work.

Hard Rock Café. Rendezvous with a Dream.
We can attest to the fact that Hard Rock Café is addictive. We have already commented on its excellent restaurant in the past, situated in the very center of the city, adorned with a unique collection of “fetish” souvenirs of the music world and with excellent service. We had the great pleasure of seeing the show El Efecto Mariposa put on, a show in which they created a very intimate and special atmosphere as well as more recently the concert of the mythical Ocean Color Scene, legends of 90s BritPop, who transformed Hard Rock Café into a veritable temple of rock.
This month, it's the turn of El Sueño de Morfeo, "the Asturian boys and the girl from the island" as they define themselves. They are taking a time-out from their regular 2010 tour to make a stop at the Hard Rock Café Barcelona this Wednesday, April 14th, to present us their last album as well as their hits. We are convinced that the Hard Rock Café will once again live a magical night in an intimate atmosphere, in which the contact between artists, music and audience will become a reality. Congratulations to the Hard Rock Café for this initiative, without doubt unique in the city. We, for sure, will be there tonight!

Towards an Education Without Borders.
The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is an initiative that came out of the Forum on Education held in Dakar in 2000. In this forum the international community promised to guarantee a quality education for all by 2015. The measures taken to put into action this commitment clearly are insufficient as demonstrated by the fact that over 80 million children still don’t have access to an education.
GCE lobbies for the implementation of the Dakar agreements. Education Without Borders, together with Entreculturas and Ayuda en Acción, forms part of the Spanish chapter of the GCE, to which also a number of other NGOs and education unions adhere.
Among GCE’s activities is the promotion of the Global Action Weeks which aim at raising the awareness of politicians, educators, the media and society in general about the current situation. Investment in education is not only a fundamental human right but also impacts directly on a person’s level of income and progress.

For the premiere we have selected someone, who has enthralled us since we first came across her work, Anka Manshusen. Educated in different schools in Hamburg, Anka Manshusen has, through her projects and efforts, achieved the creation of her own and unmistakable universe. The common denominator is the extreme sensibility that Anka has captured in each and very one of her compositions. As a result the attention of the viewer is captivated instantly.
Anka, methodical in her execution, uses her work as a vehicle of expression and communication. The result is a sequence of clear messages which appeal directly to the viewer’s senses – whether he is an admirer or a critic. Able to halt existing movement or to create some where previously there was none, Anka’s work points straight to memories, to the reminiscence of past images as well as the projection to our future space/time. The past educates us with our senses for what the futures hold
s through our recollections. But above all Anka celebrates life, the most important thing we enjoy and which continuously enthralls us.
Anka, like her work, is movement and evolution. This is reflected in her different projects which we have gotten to know over the last few years. “Sitting here”, “Daughters” or “Inner Garden” are a part of our collective memory. In an ironic twist, her work has crossed from one lens to another to be exhibited on the silver screen. None other than Woody Allen expressly asked for “Inner Garden” series to be included in his famous homage to our beloved city “Vicky, Christina, Barcelona”. Suffice it to say that we are not surprised that this legend
of the celluloid has become an admirer of particularly this project which invites us to explore our own inner garden and memories.
From March 5th until April 15th Anka Manshusen’s work will be showcased with some of her latest yet unknown work in the Galería Carlos Roldós, C/ Puigdorfila 4, 07001 Palma de Mallorca.

The Palate of Gaudí.
Tradition, architecture and above all haute cuisine come together in this unique and exclusive place, the restaurant Casa Calvet. The moment one arrives, still unaware of the experience the dishes constitute, the space immediately captivates one’s gaze. Something that is hardly surprising given that the building was designed by none other than Gaudí for the Calvet family, who had made their fortune in the textile industry. But the real experience are its dishes. Under the direction of Miguel Alija in the kitchen, a perfect equilibrium between traditional Mediterranean cooking, avant-garde cuisine and a hint of Asian influence is created and maintained. The premium quality of the products used and their fusion in a fitting composition of dishes make up a careful balanced menu. Elaborated dishes without superfluous artifice give the required importance to the main ingredient. As a result, one is able to appreciate it much more and that is one is grateful for.
The wine list is another strong point of Casa Calvet. The large variety of its selection includes more than 100 prestigious wines – a majority of them Spanish. UNICEF, Helping the Children of Haiti.
After the deaths, the debris, the desolation, a glimmer of hope can still be found in Haiti, and we found that glimmer precisely in the eyes of children, who are indubitably the most vulnerable at this time. UNICEF, as always, works to help the children, and, in this case, the little ones of Haiti need your help.
Having received reports that children are being taken out of the country without the appropriate legal safeguards, UNICEF has put in place and strengthened measures to prevent child trafficking. News have also been broadcast that children are abandoning hospitals all by themselves or in the company of people who prove not to be family. Haitian authorities have opened investigations and increased surveillance at the country’s exit points to prevent children being abducted. UNICEF and 28 other organizations working in Haiti are putting together all the information and resources to protect the children from falling prey to child trafficking networks.
Among the measures taken, with the support of UN forces, are visits to hospitals to ensure that their staff is aware of the importance of checking the identity of anyone who wants to take a child with them. At the moment the most important task consists of locating all the children who find themselves on their own and take them to safe places, where they can receive care and attention. Once there they are registered in a database of unaccompanied minors and concurrently a database of family members looking for lost children is in the works. The goal, of course, is to reunite these children with their families and in those cases where this will not be possible, when the time comes, other options will be considered.

On this occasion we would like to highlight the UICN, the Union International for the Conservation of Nature. They contribute to finding pragmatic solutions for the urgent challenges the environment and global development of the planet face by aiding scientific research, managing field projects all over the world, bringing together governments, NGOs, the UN, international conventions and companies in order to elaborate policies, laws and good practices.
UICN's activity mainly centers on the preservation of this biodiversity, which involves putting a stop to the disappearance of animal and plant species as well as the destruction of natural habitats. Global warming, energy, means of subsistence and the economy are the four principal challenges humanity confronts in close relation to biodiversity.
How can you contribute and participate in UICN’s effort? There are different ways to help them in their mission to make the world more sustainable. Your organization or company can become a UICN member, or you yourself as a scientist or conservation professional can join one of their six work commissions.
